Last time I traveled from Prague to Leipzig, the train was extremely packed and the journey became quite stressful for me and my dog. When we had to step over in Bad Schandau, I decided to spend some time there and take the next connecting train.
The spontaneous stop was totally worth it! We both not only regained our energy but also discovered what a whimsical place this little train station in Bad Schandau is (see below).
When you have the option, I would always recommend to buy a flex ticket and have the option to make spontaneous breaks in your train journey. This helps to decompress and gives your dog the possibility to pee and walk around.
A stopover at the train station Bad Schandau (Germany)
Bad Schandau is located in Saxon Switzerland, a scenic region in the east of Germany near the Czech border.
The railway station Bad Schandau is located directly on the river Elbe, where a ferry runs.
There are tables and chairs behind the station where you can take a break (no need to buy anything).
The station provides a few luggage lockers where you can store your belongings and take a short, carefree stroll around the area until you have to take the train.
There is also a café in the station with (rather overpriced) organic products.
A three-legged cat
There is a three-legged cat that lives in the station building. It has its own chair to sleep on. Everyone there knows her.
Photo caption: Somehow her face reminds me of Emma Stone (the eyes? the mouth?)
A sauna inside
There is some sort of brine grotto inside (!) the station building that you can rent. You have to be a group of people though.
As if that’s not absurd enough – the photos make it even more surreal, they are my favorite. Aren’t those people looking as if they are attending a quiz show?
